Peer Review

PICCS teachers engage in a rigorous peer review process to develop, refine and publish model units of instruction. To initiate a peer review, teachers prepare a detailed description of a unit of instruction. A "Unit of Instruction" encompasses all of the elements that must be developed and refined in order to make a curricular and instructional practice effective. Teachers who participate in a PICCS Peer Review begin by documenting their Unit of Instruction by addressing all core components as defined by the New York State Academy of Teaching and Learning. They then engage in a two-phase process:

  • School Level Peer Review – A panel of the teacher’s peers convenes to review the unit of instruction. The panel must be comprised of teachers who are experienced in the subject area and/or grade level of the unit being reviewed.
  • PICCS Network Level Peer Review – Once a unit of instruction is passed through the School Level Peer Review process, the teacher can then take it on to the PICCS Network Level where a panel of his or her peers from across the network of 22 PICCS schools convenes to review the unit of instruction. This panel must be comprised of teachers who have already successfully passed the Network Level with a unit of instruction in the same subject and/or grade level.
